1. Avoid yelling
a. Use non-verbal actions to get attention
b. Use an amplification system if you are addressing a big group
c. Maintain good posture to improve voice projection
d. Prior to speaking, ensure you have people’s attention,,reduce background noise as much as possible and position yourself as close topeople as possible.
2. When singing or speaking, concentrate on good breathsupport
a. If you run out of air, don’t force yourself to sing or speak– take more frequent breaths (i.e. pausing)
3. When singing, sing in a range that is comfortable to you
4. Speak softly rather than whispering (whispering tends tobe forced and can do harm)
5. Keep your throat moist - Keep a bottle of water at your desk and drink often - 8-10glasses of water/day
6. Avoid clearing your throat too often
a. Try swallowing, pausing or taking a deep breath. If youhave to clear it, do so gently.
7. Keep your neck and jaw as relaxed as possible, especiallywhen you speak
a. Check that you are not clenching your teeth (they shouldbe slightly apart when at rest)
b. Attempt to eliminate muscular tension in the neck
c. Keep your head erect. When you speak the larynx rises andif you bend your head down, you will restrict this natural movement and interferewith proper breathing
8. Rest your voice as well as your body when you are ill ortired
9. Treat allergies and infections promptly
10.Avoid oily/spicy food/colas—increase acidity and reflux
11.Limit your intake of tea/coffee - 2 cups/day withtoast/biscuits etc ,avoid taking on empty stomach
12.Quit smoking and avoid smoke filled environments.
13.Avoid alcohol intake.
